Every church must have some organizational structure beyond the paid staff in order to remain alive and breathing. In the United Methodist Church, there are several "governing" bodies, composed of laity and clergy, that keep the church as a building and congregation alive and well. This where the congregation gets its programs, its outreach and its financial solvency.
Instead of the word committee, "team" seems to fit these areas of service better. All of the people that sit on the council and teams are selected according to prayer and various guidelines set forth in the Book of Discipline. They must willingly accept the positions they are called for and be willing to be eager to help in their particular area of service - working together as a team.
